An exclusive expedition that offers exclusive sights and experiences with the Yasuni Wildlife. Explore rivers, lagoons, and trails in search of species like giant river otters, harpy eagles, and even elusive jaguars.
itinerary
Your journey will start at El Coca, where you’ll meet your tour leader. We’ll then head towards the Shiripuno River alongside the Auca Road for around two hours. Once in the Shiripuno River, we’ll head down the current towards WAO Kamp —it is our gateway to the Yasuni.
The canoe ride towards WAO Kamp lasts around an hour and a half. While on the canoe, you may spot different animal species, including playful monkeys and colorful birds. As you dive into the heart of the Yasuni, you’ll feel the rainforest’s lively wildlife. Their calls feel like a warm welcome chant.
Once you arrive at the safari camp, you’ll enjoy a warm welcome from our staff and relax in the facilities.
To catch the best of the Yasuni’s secrets, we’ll rise at 4:30 a.m. for a quick snack before heading out for a short exploration in the surrounding lagoons. During these initial explorations, you’ll have a closer look at the local species.
After a short while, we’ll head back to the Camping installations for a healthy breakfast. Once you’re rested, prepare for a longer expedition to the nearby Blackwater lagoon. This lagoon is an oxbow lagoon, a natural formation due to the meandering sections of the Shiripuno River. Oxbow lakes and lagoons are essential for balancing the local wildlife and are home to many species, including the iconic Green Anaconda.
Once you’ve explored the oxbow lake, we’ll head back to WAO for lunch and once again, explore the surrounding habitats. With the help of your naturalist guide, you’ll get to see hoatzins, caimans, waterbirds, and the playful Giant River Otter.
Today, we’ll have a land-based exploration in search of the imposing Harpy Eagle. For a better look at the harpy, we’ll head out to a lookout point right after breakfast. The lookout trail gets us to a mature terra firme forest.
During our expedition, we’ll see the beauty of the rainforest as we go higher. While the vegetation grows denser and lusher, you’ll see many animals right above you. We’ll most likely see howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and woolly monkeys, the main prey of the harpy. Harpy eagles are excellent hunters; their prey includes small monkeys and birds, as well as tree-dwelling reptiles. Along the way, we may also spot rare birds of prey, including the King Vulture, Black-faced Hawk, and White-faced Hawk.
After returning to the camping facilities, you can opt to participate in a guided night walk to explore the surrounding nocturnal wildlife. You might catch a glimpse of nocturnal mammals, frogs, insects, or even a tapir or ocelot.
Once we wake up, we’ll start our final exploration day by entering a new trail system located 40 minutes from the Camp. Deep in the untouched primary forest, we’ll look for tracks and marks left by jaguars. The imposing and fierce jaguars prefer calm places, usually preferring to hunt at dawn or dusk. They are also quite docile when encountered and tend to maintain some distance due to their elusive nature.
Jaguars tend to avoid human contact, and it may take some time to spot them. During our expedition, you can spot and track other mammals, such as tapirs, deer, and peccaries, which are the natural prey of jaguars.
This zone is ideal for tracking jaguar footprints and spotting more local wildlife. On our way back to WAO, keep on scanning the skies and treetops in search of raptors and other birds alongside our journey.
To end your stay with us, you’ll wake up at 4:30 a.m. to enjoy a nutritious breakfast before we head back upstream. Once in El Coca, you’ll depart for Quito.
Say goodbye to the rainforest. Relish the memories built in one of the most unique places on Earth. Be sure to take all your things with you, we’ll await your return.
Return home with your senses sharpened and your memory full of rare encounters with the great icons of the Amazon.
