The Last Warriors of the Jungle | Meet the Waorani

Among the many secrets hidden in the Amazon Jungle, we can find the Waorani people. These indigenous communities live right in the heart of the Yasuni National Park, guarding this magical place. This obscure culture is fascinating, and their importance is essential to conserving the National Park.

But who are these people? Why are they so important? These communities are one of the most obscure secrets of the Yasuni. Luckily for all of us, we have learned a lot about them in the most recent years.

Learn about their history, culture, and traditions.

First, a quick historical recap.

How were the Waorani found?

Since the Spaniards arrived on the American continent, almost the entirety of the local communities have been attached to and influenced by Western culture. For example, people in the Andes have merged ancient religious rituals with Christian celebrations.

However, the Amazon cultures were less influenced by Western culture since they were harder to reach.

Some of the best hidden were the Waorani. As a matter of fact, the first attempts to contact them were as recent as in the fifties. However, with time passing, the Waorani people have gradually accepted outsiders into their territory and community. There are still a few self-isolated communities, but they are small communities that don’t cross into the rest of the territory.

Their culture and spirituality

Because of how recently they have been contacted, the Waorani culture is pretty much intact. For instance, their religion, spiritual beliefs, and traditions haven’t been greatly influenced by Christianity. This is a key point in their importance for conservation because of how they relate to nature.

They are mainly hunter-gatherer and are consistently nomadic. Their camps are built to last a good couple of years, and after they recede to environmental conditions, they usually relocate and build another camp. This has gradually decreased as the contact with outsider communities and people has increased.

The Waorani religion and spirituality are fundamentally linked with nature. The spiritual and material worlds have no difference between them, and the forest is The World for them. Their hunting and other practices go through these beliefs. For example, they don’t hunt deer since their eyes resemble human eyes. They also have great respect for jaguars and eagles since they believe they’re spiritual ancestors, while snakes are a bad omen; hunting any of these animals is considered taboo.

When hunting, they use a poison called “Curare” since killing an animal violently would be an offense. Using Curare for hunting is rather considered a “natural harvesting” and keeps the spirits at ease.

Their importance for the Yasuni

As we just told you, the Waorani spirituality is closely related to nature, and because of this, the Waorani play an essential role in the protection of the national park.

Living in the heart of the most diverse place on Earth is not a matter of disdain. Because of their beliefs, they guard nature with jealousy. This has proven to be true since they have fought to protect the Yasuni on different occasions.

But first, we need to talk about the Yasuni.

The Yasuni National Park and why it is important.

This rich natural reserve is ย the most biodiverse place on Earth. Scientists and researchers keep on finding new animal and plant species that have unique characteristics.

These species are important because they’re endemic, meaning they don’t exist anywhere else.

The lush forest and big rivers and lakes are not a mere destination. We know that due to its majestic landscapes, Yasuni is a popular eco-tourism destination. But on top of that, this natural shelter is essential for cooling down the planet. Understanding its importance is crucial nowadays, considering the effects of global warming.

This magical place is, however, endangered because of the exploitation of natural resources. There have been many attempts to intervene in the protected area, and people have firmly stood against it. Among these people, the Waorani played an essential role.

The Waorani struggle

The Waorani people have fought for the protection of their land. Even though leaving the Yasuni can be pretty intimidating, some Waorani people (including elders) left their homeland and came to the capital on different occasions to fight for the rights of nature.

They have achieved the protection of their land. For example, they stopped the exploitation of resources that might lead to the pollution of this delicate ecosystem. There is still a long way to go, but the guardians of the Yasuni are there to protect it and will always be.
